Scaling Workshops
Supporting teams to navigate trade-offs and complexity as innovations scale.
What Are Scaling Workshops?
Scaling Workshops are facilitated, discussion-based sessions designed to help teams critically examine how innovations scale in real-world contexts. Rather than focusing solely on expansion or uptake, these workshops support organizations in reflecting on the social, environmental, and institutional dynamics that shape long-term outcomes.
Grounded in food systems research and applied experience, Scaling Workshops help teams assess assumptions, surface risks, and adapt scaling strategies to remain responsible, effective, and responsive to complexity.
What Makes Scaling Workshops Different
Many scaling approaches emphasize speed, replication, or market reach. Scaling Workshops take a different approach by helping teams identify trade-offs, unintended consequences, and system-level interactions that influence how innovations perform over time.
Through guided dialogue and structured reflection, teams move beyond linear scaling models to develop strategies that better align with long-term impact, sustainability, and institutional realities.
Who Scaling Workshops Are For
Scaling Workshops are designed for innovation teams, development organizations, researchers, and practitioners who are preparing to scale an innovation or reassess an existing scaling strategy.
They are particularly valuable for teams working in complex environments where social, environmental, or institutional dynamics influence access, adoption, and long-term impact.
Participant Experience / Outcomes
Participants engage in interactive, facilitator-led sessions that encourage critical reflection and collective problem-solving. Teams examine how scaling decisions interact with broader systems, including policy environments, resource constraints, and stakeholder relationships.
Rather than producing a fixed roadmap, participants leave with a clearer understanding of key trade-offs and a revised scaling approach that is better aligned with real-world complexity and long-term goals.
Facilitator Pathway
Scaling Workshops are delivered by experienced facilitators with expertise in responsible innovation, systems thinking, and agricultural development. Practitioners interested in supporting organizations through responsible scaling processes may have opportunities to train as facilitators through the RI Academy.
Resources / Case Examples
Scaling Workshops draw on research, tools, and case-based learning developed by Responsible Innovations and its partners. These resources provide additional context and examples of how teams have navigated complexity and trade-offs as innovations scale.
Scaling Workshops within the RI Academy
Scaling Workshops are part of the RI Academy’s broader capacity-building offerings and are often paired with GenderUp Trainings to support inclusive and responsible scaling strategies.
